Rubbish Removal Dubbo: Skip Bins vs Pick-up

In short: for a big clean-up, a skip bin is often the easier way to remove household or green waste in Dubbo. For small amounts, Dubbo Regional Council's Whylandra tip and your two yearly waste vouchers are worth knowing about.

Your options for rubbish removal in Dubbo

In short: For a big clean-up, a skip bin is usually the simplest way to remove household or garden waste. For a load or two, your My DRC Waste Vouchers can cover a tip visit or a booked bulky rubbish pick-up.

Most Dubbo households have three ways to get rid of more rubbish than fits in their bins:

  1. A skip bin, delivered to your driveway and taken away when you're done.
  2. Taking it to the tip yourself, at Dubbo Regional Council's Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre.
  3. A bulky rubbish collection, booked with one of your My DRC Waste Vouchers.

Which one makes sense depends on how much you have, what it is, and whether you have a trailer and the time to do the runs.

Option 1: a skip bin

In short: A skip suits jobs with a lot of mixed rubbish, heavy waste or many trailer loads of garden waste, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one go.

A skip sits on your driveway (or on the street with council approval) for an agreed hire period. You can fill it over a few days, and you don't need a trailer, a ute or anyone to lift heavy items. Skips can take more than a voucher load or a bulky pick-up, including bagged household rubbish, loose garden waste, soil, bricks and renovation waste, as long as you choose the right bin and tell the operator. They can't take asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, tyres or chemicals in a normal load. See what can go in a skip and the size guide.

For a deceased estate, a house move or a big shed or garage job, see our clean-outs guide.

Option 2: the Whylandra tip

In short: If you have a trailer and only a load or two, you can take rubbish to council's Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre yourself, and a waste voucher can cover a small load.

Dubbo Regional Council's Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre is on Cooba Road, just off Narromine Road, about 15 km west of Dubbo. Council lists it as open 8am to 4:45pm on weekdays and 9am to 4:45pm on weekends, closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Household customers need to arrive before 4:45pm. It's a cashless site. Council also runs a waste transfer station at Wellington and smaller village depots.

Option 3: your My DRC Waste Vouchers

In short: Eligible households get two My DRC Waste Vouchers each financial year. Each one can be used for a tip visit or swapped for a booked bulky rubbish collection.

Council gives households with a two-bin or three-bin kerbside service two My DRC Waste Vouchers each financial year, managed through the online My DRC Waste portal. You can use them as two tipping vouchers, two bulky rubbish collections, or one of each. Unused vouchers expire on 30 June and don't roll over.

  • As a tipping voucher: council has said a voucher covers up to 1 m³ at a council waste facility, and can be used for green waste, concrete and mixed general waste. Mattresses, tyres, hazardous materials, solar panels and asbestos aren't covered.
  • As a bulky rubbish collection: you book a date, then put up to one box trailer of bulky rubbish (about 2 m³) on the kerb the Sunday before. A collection can't happen without a booking. It's for bulky household items such as furniture, whitegoods and appliances, not bags of household rubbish, loose garden waste, soil, rocks, building waste, asbestos or hazardous materials.

What about my kerbside bins?

In short: Your kerbside bins are for everyday rubbish, recycling and food and garden waste, not clean-ups.

Depending on where you live, Dubbo Regional Council provides a two-bin or three-bin service: a red-lid bin for general waste, a yellow-lid recycling bin and, in three-bin areas, a green-lid FOGO bin for food and garden organics. Council's interactive map shows which service your address gets.

So which is easier?

In short: Pick a skip for big, mixed or heavy jobs. Use your vouchers for small amounts of the waste they accept.

  • A skip bin usually makes sense for a full clean-out, a renovation, a big garden or shed job, heavy waste, or when you don't have a trailer or the time for several tip runs.
  • A tipping voucher suits a small trailer load of green waste, concrete or mixed general waste.
  • A bulky rubbish collection suits furniture and whitegoods that fit in one box trailer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to get rid of a lot of rubbish in Dubbo?

It depends on how much you have and what it is. For one or two loads, a trailer run to the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre, using one of your My DRC Waste Vouchers, may be enough. For a big clean-out, heavy waste or many loads, a skip bin is often the easier option, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one trip.

Where is the Dubbo tip and when is it open?

Dubbo Regional Council's Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre is on Cooba Road, just off Narromine Road, about 15 km west of Dubbo. Council lists it as open 8am to 4:45pm on weekdays and 9am to 4:45pm on weekends, closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. It's cashless.

Does Dubbo Regional Council pick up bulky rubbish?

Yes, if you book it. Eligible households get two My DRC Waste Vouchers each financial year, and each can be swapped for a bulky rubbish collection of up to one box trailer (about 2 m³). You put items on the kerb the Sunday before your booked date.

How do the My DRC Waste Vouchers work?

Households with a two-bin or three-bin service get two vouchers each financial year through the My DRC Waste portal. Each can be used as a tipping voucher or a bulky rubbish collection. They expire on 30 June and don't roll over.

Can I use a Dubbo waste voucher for a skip bin?

No. Council's vouchers are for its own waste facilities and its booked bulky rubbish collection. Private skip hire isn't one of the listed uses.

Can a skip bin take garden waste and building rubbish?

Usually, yes, which is one reason people choose a skip. Heavy waste such as soil, concrete and bricks normally needs a smaller bin with a weight limit, and asbestos can never go in a general skip. Tell the operator what you have when you request a quote.

Do I need a permit for a skip bin on the street in Dubbo?

A skip wholly on your own property generally doesn't need council approval. A skip on the road, footpath or verge usually needs approval from Dubbo Regional Council. See our council skip permits guide for details.
